'In Trusted Care Award' for EYFS Providers

The Department for Education has said “Genuine award schemes designed to ensure that more people in childcare settings have the Paediatric first aid training they need so that they are able to deal with accidents and injuries for very young children are to be welcomed”. This award scheme sets out to reassure parents that the awarded setting is going above and beyond with its first aid provisions to ensure their children are safe. 

Childcare providers must be able to demonstrate the following. This is above the legal minimum set by the Department of education and the HSE.

•  80% of Staff working within EYFS environment will hold a current PFA certificate which has at least 12 months left before its expiry. This Certificate must be provided by a FAIB approved provider.
•  Pledge that at least Two people who hold a full current paediatric first aid (PFA) certificate must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present, this includes making sure a first aider is accompanying children on outings.
•  Training must be renewed every three years.
•  Pledge that for new staff, a Paediatric first aid certificate within two months of starting work to be included in the required staff to child EYFS ratio.
•  Conduct a Staff Survey every 12 months to assess the need for a basic refresher for all trained staff, this is useful to stay up to date with changes.
•  Have on site a working AED (Defib) or be within 200m (if on foot) or 500m (if the premises has access to a vehicle) of a public AED (Defib).
• Pledge that an accident reporting / recording process is in place which all staff know how to access. 
• Pledge that at least one fully stocked first aid kit in every classroom which is checked weekly.
• Pledge that If on a school trip, a travel first aid kit will be present with at least two first aiders.
